AfriCartoons

Africartoons.com has a simple mission — to tell the world the story of Africa and its people through the eyes of some of South Africa’s greatest political and editorial cartoonists. Featuring the work of such notables as Zapiro, Jeremy Nell, Madam & Eve and Dr Jack, Africartoons.com sets itself out to be one of the foremost sites on the web for the funnier side of African events.

Designed by web agency digitalJUNGLE, I was asked to transform their designs into a fully realised website. As well as building the XHTML and CSS aspects of the site, I also worked heavily on the CMS integration, using Drupal as the base and developing several custom modules to get the most out of the site. Highlights include dynamically created RSS feeds for the various cartoonists’ works, a mobile version of the site, several javascript widgets to share content on other sites, and integration with several social media web-apps, such as Facebook, Twitter and youTube.

Upon the site’s lunch, the site has grown considerably, with  South African cartoonists applauding the site’s vision and uploading their newest cartoons daily, as well as the Nelson Mandela Trust using the site to celebrate Mandela’s 20 Years of Freedom.
