AfriCartoons

Africartoons.com has a simple misÂsion — to tell the world the story of Africa and its people through the eyes of some of South Africa’s greatest politÂical and editÂorÂial carÂtoonÂists. Featuring the work of such notÂables as Zapiro, Jeremy Nell, Madam & Eve and Dr Jack, Africartoons.com sets itself out to be one of the foreÂmost sites on the web for the funÂnier side of African events.
Designed by web agency digitÂalJUNGLE, I was asked to transÂform their designs into a fully realÂised webÂsite. As well as buildÂing the XHTML and CSS aspects of the site, I also worked heavÂily on the CMS integÂraÂtion, using Drupal as the base and develÂopÂing sevÂeral cusÂtom modÂules to get the most out of the site. Highlights include dynamÂicÂally creÂated RSS feeds for the variÂous carÂtoonÂists’ works, a mobile verÂsion of the site, sevÂeral javasÂcript widÂgets to share conÂtent on other sites, and integÂraÂtion with sevÂeral social media web-apps, such as Facebook, Twitter and youTube.
Upon the site’s lunch, the site has grown conÂsidÂerÂably, with South African carÂtoonÂists applaudÂing the site’s visÂion and uploadÂing their newÂest carÂtoons daily, as well as the Nelson Mandela Trust using the site to celÂebÂrate Mandela’s 20 Years of Freedom.
